Teaching

Gary is an English Language Arts Teacher at Tenafly High School in Tenafly, New Jersey, where he has taught for twenty-seven years. He earned a master’s degree in English from Iowa State University, and a master’s degree in Teaching English and a bachelor’s degree in English from Rhode Island College. At Tenafly High, he has advised both the newspaper and the literary journal, positions which have helped him empower students to find their writing voices, spark their creativity, learn to love literature, and develop leadership skills. Gary was honored with the Princeton University Distinguished Secondary School Teaching Award in 2002. He was named Bergen County Teacher of the Year for 2023-2024 by the New Jersey Department of Education. His dual career as a writer and teacher has helped him infuse his lessons with real-world teaching moments, which have inspired students at every level.
